Sumário do Projecto

This project is the natural continuation of the previous project funded by FCT (45k€) CERN/FIS-PAR/0029/2019, which is still running and ends on November 14, 2021, with the aimof strengthening and implementing the second European Strategy (defined by the European Commission itself), for the development of Particle Physics, thus recognizing thefundamental role of CERN as a leading global institution in the development of scientific research at the international level. To this end, objectives were defined for the project in linewith this strategy and which had as their central focus, to achieve the best possible precision in the measurements made by the LHC experiments and their interpretation, during thehigh luminosity period (HL-LHC). The aim was to identify the true potential of the LHC during the accelerator's lifetime. In this context two papers were prepared (in the form of"Yellow Reports") i.e., "Standard Model Physics at the HL-LHC and HE-LHC" [1] and "Higgs Physics at the HL-LHC and HE-LHC" [2], in which members of the team were directlyinvolved. The studies initially focused on precision measurements associated with top quark physics (in the dominant decay channel t→bW, and in rare decays via Flavour ChangingNeutral Currents, FCNC, and their interpretation in the framework of an Effective Field Theory, SMEFT)[1]. Later, the studies were extended to the CP structure of the Higgs bosoncouplings in the associated ttH production [2]. These studies have shown that unless new strategies are defined now, the gains that can be made in the measurements precision withthe traditionally used methods, and their interpretations in the context of a global fits of models to available data, are relatively moderate i.e., a factor of 2 or 3, over the next 20years.The focus of this project is to continue the search for new global strategies to improve the potential of the LHC in precision measurements and their phenomenological interpretationin terms of an effective model (SMEFT). To this end, it is intended to find new observables both associated with quark top and Higgs boson physics, since the team has extensiveexperience in this area. With the recent discovery of anomalies associated with the b-quark sector by the LHCb experiment, it is imperative to understand how the b-quark sector canbe integrated into the global fits, within an effective theory such as SMEFT. The extensive experience that the team acquired during the execution of the previous project in MachineLearning/Deep Learning, now allows opening new perspectives in the use of these algorithms, both in the definition of new observables that can be complementary to others alreadystudied by the team, and in the use of these algorithms in global fits within the SMEFT model itself. The research work will be developed within the framework of the participation ofteam members in the LHC working groups, "LHC Effective Field Theory WG" and "TOP Quark LHC Working Group" of which members of the team are part. The research work will be framed within the activities of the LIP Phenomenology Group.
