Particles for Justice

LIP-ECO | 10 Junho, 2020

"The international particle physics community proposed for June 10 a strike and reflection day against racism in academia and in local and global communities. The LIP community joins the movement, which directly concerns also Europe and Portugal "

The international community of particle physicists proposed for June 10 a global strike and reflection day against racism in academia and in different local and global communities. This is a global problem, which manifests itself in multiple forms, also in Europe and in Portugal. The LIP community joins this movement, as do many of the great institutions and international collaborations are a part of:

"(...) Therefore, as physicists, we believe an academic strike is urgently needed: to hit pause, to give Black academics a break and to give others an opportunity to reflect on their own complicity in anti-Black racism in academia and their local and global communities. This #strike4blacklives is in dialogue with a call from colleagues in astronomy to #shutdownSTEM and #shutdownacademia for at least the day of June 10. (...)"

ATLAS : "The ATLAS Collaboration draws its creativity and strength from world-wide members with different race, gender, and culture. This pluralism is an essential part of our identity as scientists and we strongly stand behind CERN's principles of inclusiveness and diversity as enshrined in the CERN Code of Conduct."

CMS: "Recent events in the US have reminded us that racism and other forms of injustice affects many of us. We, the members of the CMS Scientific Collaboration, from 55 countries around the world, condemn all forms of injustice and reaffirm our commitment to justice and equality in the face of discrimination and hatred. Today, we stand in solidarity with our Black colleagues in the US and around the world and ask that you extend your support to each other as colleagues and friends."

SNO+: "As many of you are aware, recent events have prompted a strike associated with #Strike4BlackLives, under the heading "Particles for Justice," tomorrow, June 10.  In support of the principle and of those who plan on participating, the SNO+ Board encourages all collaborators not to participate in activities related to SNO+ on that day, excluding of course activities that are important for the safety of people and equipment.  We hope that the extra time can be used to consider the ways in which we can remove inequities in our own field, and think of ways to improve upon the glacial speed with which diversity and inclusion have progressed in science."

DUNE: "In support of #Strike4BlackLives and Particles for Justice, we will not organise or attend any meetings or other activities tomorrow, Wednesday, June 10. We encourage all collaborators not to participate in any activities related to DUNE on that day (unless these activities are directly to the safety of people and equipment), and instead to reflect on our own responsibility for combatting racism in science, and to focus on concrete actions that will help to eliminate inequities within our societies, and specifically within science."
