News from SNO+

LIP-ECO/S. Andringa, M. Cox | 06 Maio, 2020

"SNO+ will remain a CERN recognized experiment (RE35) for another 3 years. Meanwhile, at Lisbon, colleagues from the LIP SNO+ group are taking shifts controlling the experiment from home"

SNO+ will remain a CERN recognized experiment (RE35) for another 3 years. The recognized experiment status can be given by CERN to experiments in the field of particle physics that fulfill a number of requirements, including having a substantial participation by CERN member countries and being already approved by the relevant agencies. Members of recognized experiments can, for example, register as CERN users and organize collaboration meetings at CERN. Two other astroparticle physics experiments in which LIP participates are CERN recognized: AMS, which was the first experiment recognized by CERN, and Auger. SNO + has been RE35 (Recognized Experiment 35) since 2017, and will retain this status for at least three more years.

After the installation of the SNO+ control room at LIP in 2018, which allows to take shifts remotely, instead of traveling to SNOLAB each time, our colleagues from the LIP SNO+ group are for the first time taking shifts in telework mode, i.e. controlling the SNO+ detector from home. These the so-called untethered shifts, in which you shifters are not “tied up” neither to SNOLAB nor even to a control room, and you can take the shift from anywere with sufficient internet facilities. While this is caused by the pandemic times we are going through, it is certainly a step into the future!
