A decade of high-energy collisions at the LHC

LIP-ECO | 10 Abril, 2020

"Ten years have passed since the first high-energy collisions at the LHC, on March 30, 2010. Here we gather some memories of that night's atmosphere in the control rooms, lived by LIP colleagues in ATLAS and CMS "

10 years have passed since the first high-energy collisions at the LHC, on March 30, 2010.

This was probably not the most exciting moment. Probably nothing overcame the initial start-up in September 2008, after decades of preparation, and that was followed, after a few days of successful collisions and data collection, by the accident that stopped the LHC for more than one year.

The start of the 7 TeV run in 2010 was not only an impressive jump from the previously reached 0.9 TeV (visible in the images with a much larger number of particles resulting from the collisions) but also marked the beginning of “normal life” in data taking at the LHC; of the impressive race undertaken by the accelerator and the experiments in the last decade, with centre-of-mass energies that reached 14 TeV, and a quantity and quality of accumulated data that exceeded the best expectations.

The moment we are living right now is not the most appropriate for celebrations. Nevertheless the date was remembered by CERN in its news and online publications, as well as a little throughout the world of particle physics. We highlight below some of the articles published on the subject.

LIP is part of the ATLAS and CMS collaborations since the beginning, more than 25 years ago. If we all live these moments intensely and receive the news with enthusiasm, what can we say about those who were there, in the control room or as close as possible, after so many years of preparation, waiting to finally look at the long-awaited data? ! Here we gather some memories of the atmosphere lived in the control rooms that night.
