Assembly of CALIFA in R3B at FAIR

LIP-ECO/Ofélia Janeiro/Daniel Galaviz | 16 Dezembro, 2019

"In November and December 2019, a large part of the CALIFA detector was assembled and installed at the FAIR laboratory, in Darmstadt. Elisabet Galiana from LIP's NUC-RIA group was part of the team"

During November and December 2019, the mounting and installation of a large section of CALIFA (CALorimeter for In-Flight detection of gamma rays and high energy charged pArticles), one of the key detectors of the R3B (Reactions with Relativistic Radioactive Beams) experiment, have been carried out at the FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) in Darmstadt, Germany. Elisabet Galiana, member of the NUC-RIA group from LIP joined this preparation as well as contributed on the data analysis and calibration tools related to CALIFA.

CALIFA is a segmented detector based on scintillation crystals, which will act as a total absorption gamma-calorimeter and spectrometer, as well as identifier of charged particles from target residues. In order to cover these requirements, the detector will surround the target of the R3B experiment.  The technical design includes one central part and one forward endcap, which have been assembled and installed for the first time in the R3B setup.
The accurately installation of the readout system based on APDs (Avalanche Photodiodes) is another challenge to face, due to the proximity at the GLAD magnet of the R3B setup, where strong magnetic fields can cause severe electronic damage.

At the end of the year, the first tests of the CALIFA assembled detector as well as other new components of the R3B setup are planned as a part of FAIR-Phase 0 scientific program during 2020.
