"The Portuguese Proto-Therapy and Advanced Technologies for Cancer Prevention and Treatment Association (ProtoTera) was formally created today "
ProtoTera will promote the development of a national research and education network on advanced therapies and associated technologies, leveraging the research, training and healthcare infrastructures associated with the treatment of patients with cancer using new technologies. Areas and technologies covered include, among others, high-energy particle beam therapies (namely proton-therapy), theranostics for the enhancement of precision and personalized medicine, and advanced medical imaging.
The association will stimulate the development of funding programs for research and advanced training and qualification in these areas, promote fundraising and networking among the various associates and other entities, and ensure international scientific, technical and clinical cooperation, in particular with the International Atomic Energy Agency and international reference centers, namely CERN, GSI, Heidelberg University Hospital, MD Anderson Cancer, Trento Proton Therapy Center, etc.
The founding members of ProtoTera are the Francisco Gentil Portuguese Institute of Oncology Hospital Group (GHIPOFG), Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), the University of Coimbra (UC), and the Laboratory of Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics (LIP), which today signed the respective public deed.
