20 years of the foundation of the Pierre Auger Observatory

LIP-ECO | 14 Novembro, 2019

"The official celebration is taking place at the Observatory site, in Malargüe, Province Mendoza, Argentina. The President of FCT, the Portuguese Ambassador in Argentina and the President of LIP are present"

The Pierre Auger Observatory is the world-wide largest cosmic ray detector, covering an area of 3000 km2. It is operated by a collaboration of more than 400 scientists from 17 countries.  Through LIP, Portugal is a member of the Observatory since 2006.

The Scientific Symposium, Science Fair and official Celebration will take place in Malargüe (Province Mendoza, Argentina), at the site of the Pierre Auger Observatory, on 14-16 November. Several members of the LIP group in Auger will of course be at the event. They will be honored by the presence of the President of FCT, Helena Pereira, of the Portuguese ambassador in Argentina, João Ribeiro de Almeida and of the President of LIP, Mário Pimenta.

The aim of the Observatory is the study of the highest-energy particles in the Universe. Data of the Auger Observatory led to major advances in our understanding of high-energy phenomena linked to the most violent processes in the Universe. Yet, many questions remain to be answered The currently ongoing upgrade, AugerPrime, will help to address some of them.
