“Computational Biosciences using Advanced Computing Systems” course returns for a successful 3rd edition

Lígia Breda Melo | 11 Fevereiro, 2026

"LIP was one of the course organisers and contributed with several training modules in this hands-on programme on advanced computing for the life sciences."

From 4 to 6 February 2026, the 3rd edition of the course “Computational Biosciences using Advanced Computing Systems” took place at NOVA School of Science and Technology (NOVA FCT), in Lisbon. Once again, the course was fully booked.

The course was organised by UCIBIO and LAQV, in collaboration with LIP and the National Advanced Computing Centre (CNCA). LIP played an active role in the scientific organisation and taught several modules, reinforcing its commitment to training in advanced computing for research.

Targeted at researchers aiming to start or consolidate projects with high computational demands, the course offered a strong hands-on approach, allowing participants to work directly with high-performance computing tools and infrastructures.

The programme included two main modules:

OMICS

With sessions on:
- High-throughput Sequencing Data
- Transcriptome Assembly
- Phylogenomics

Molecular Modeling
Covering:
- Structure-based Virtual Screening
- Molecular Dynamics
- Hybrid Quantum Mechanics/Molecular Mechanics

Ahead of the main sessions, an optional introductory module on job submission in HPC environments was also offered to support participants with no previous experience, helping them get started with CNCA’s HPC cluster.

Over three intensive days, participants explored methods for sequencing data analysis, molecular modeling and computational simulation, integrating advanced computing tools into real-life challenges from the life sciences.

The course was supported by BSC AI Factory Portugal, contributing to national capacity building in artificial intelligence and scientific computing.

The strong demand and fully booked registration confirm the growing interest of the research community in applying advanced computing and AI to scientific challenges - a field where LIP plays an increasingly active role, both in research and in specialised training.
