LIP at the European Symposium on the Future of Particle Physics
"LIP was part of the Portuguese delegation at the European Strategy for Particle Physics Symposium, held in Venice at the end of June."
From 23 to 27 June 2025, the Open Symposium of the European Strategy for Particle Physics took place in Lido di Venezia. This event is a crucial milestone in the process of updating the European strategic vision for the field. Promoted by the CERN Council, the symposium brought together researchers, institutional representatives and decision-makers from across Europe and beyond, with the aim of defining future priorities for particle physics at both European and global levels.

LIP was represented by several members in key institutional roles, including Pedro Abreu (Chair of IPPOG - International Particle Physics Outreach Group), Nuno Castro and Guilherme Milhano (Directors of LIP), and Mário Pimenta (Portugal’s Delegate to the CERN Council).
This symposium followed a broad call for input to the European scientific community, which resulted in over 260 written submissions, including the contribution from the Portuguese community, coordinated by LIP and based on a national symposium held in Lisbon in December 2024.
The European Strategy for Particle Physics is the main framework for setting priorities and long-term planning in the field. It aims to ensure coordinated and efficient use of scientific resources across Europe, in alignment with similar strategic processes in the US and Asia. The current update - the third since 2006 - will guide the next decade of research, including decisions on new accelerator projects and large-scale scientific infrastructures, as well as priorities in areas such as neutrinos, dark matter, detector technologies, sustainability and scientific computing.
The Venice symposium was a key moment of public and technical debate in the strategy consolidation process. Its conclusions will be synthesised into a final document to be submitted to the CERN Council in January 2026.
