Hadronic physics: a priority for European science
"The SHARP project, led by LIP researcher Catarina Quintans and dedicated to hadronic physics, is one of six Portuguese-led initiatives selected in the 2024 COST programme."
The 2024 edition of the European COST programme announced the funding of another 70 new scientific programmes, six of which have Portuguese researchers as their main proponents. One of them was the SHARP project (Structure and Spectroscopy of HAdrons Research Project), dedicated to hadronic physics, whose proponent is LIP researcher Catarina Quintans. This project is dedicated to creating a network of experimentalists and theoreticians in the area of the structure and spectroscopy of hadrons, and in this start-up phase brings together 58 researchers from 17 countries.
Portugal is one of the "inclusiveness target countries" (ITC), European countries whose investment in science is far below the European average. COST provides incentives for better integration of ITC countries into the European scientific fabric, while promoting gender parity and support for early-stage researchers.
Projects are funded for a period of four years, with amounts of around 150,000 euros per year. The fact that the programme is permanently "open" to more groups and researchers during the duration of the projects sets it apart, reinforcing the focus on inclusivity.
