Master's Thesis Defenses
"Four LIP students successfully defended their master's theses recently, showcasing excellent research contributions across diverse fields of particle physics. Congratulations to all new Masters!"
Four students associated with LIP have recently defended their master's theses, each making significant contributions to their respective research areas:
Inês Moreira and Inês Pinto, both members of the LIP ATLAS Group and students at Instituto Superior Técnico, defended their dissertations on November 28. Inês Moreira’s thesis, titled "New Physics Searches at the LHC using Anomaly Detection", was supervised by Rute Pedro and Nuno Castro. The examination committee consisted of Mário Pimenta (President), Rute Pedro, and Inês Ochoa de Castro. Inês Pinto’s work, titled "Robust Anomaly Detection in Independent Searches for New Physics with the ATLAS/LHC Experiment", which focused on advanced anomaly detection techniques, was evaluated by a committee including Mário Pimenta (President), Rute Pedro, and José Enrique Navarro (University of Valencia).
Diogo Costa, a Physics Master’s student at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) and a member of LIP's Phenomenology Group, defended his thesis on November 27th. Titled "Improving the vacuum baseline for in-medium jet physics studies", his research explored precision in theoretical models for jet substructure observables in heavy-ion collisions. The work was supervised by Liliana Apolinário and Alba Soto-Ontoso. The evaluation jury included Mário Pimenta (President), Guilherme Milhano, Armesto Pérez, and Alba Soto-Ontoso.
Henrique de Sousa Santos, a Master’s student at IST and a member of LIP's SND Group, successfully defended his thesis, "Searching for Beyond the Standard Model particles decaying to muon pairs with SND@LHC". His research was supervised by Nuno Leonardo and Cristóvão Vilela, with the examination committee consisting of Catarina Quintans, Mário Pimenta (President), and Simona Ilieva.
Congratulations to Inês Moreira, Inês Pinto, Diogo Costa, and Henrique de Sousa Santos on their achievements and for contributing to the advancement of particle physics. We look forward to seeing your future contributions to science!
