LIP Open Day 2024

Last Friday, November 22, 2024, the Laboratory for Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics (LIP) opened its doors to the public as part of the Science and Technology Week promoted by Ciência Viva. The event, held from 2:30 PM to 8:00 PM, celebrated particle physics, scientific research, and the interaction between scientists and visitors.
With activities spread across three floors of LIP's facilities in Lisbon, the program included guided tours, interactive demonstrations, and a peddy-paper (a game similar to a scavenger hunt) that encouraged active participation. The journey invited participants to explore a variety of topics, such as the work conducted at CERN, space radiation, advanced computing, medical applications of particle physics, and cosmic ray detection.
The "Disinformation" exhibition kicked off many of the visits, challenging attendees to reflect on their ability to identify false information. From there, each room offered new discoveries and insights into the cutting-edge science carried out by LIP.
The peddy-paper was one of the highlights of the event, with visitors collecting stamps at each area they explored while engaging in challenges and conversations with researchers. Those who completed the journey received a symbolic prize, but the greatest reward was the curiosity and enthusiasm sparked throughout the event.
Over 60 people participated in the Open Day, giving the experience an average rating of 4.6 stars for both enjoyment and learning opportunities. For the researchers, it was also a valuable chance to share their work and witness the impact science has on the public.
