LIP at the European Researchers' Night 2024: Science for Global Challenges
"Last Friday, September 27th, LIP once again took part in the European Researchers' Night, an important initiative that brings science closer to the public in various cities across the country. "
This year's European Researchers' Night (NEI), themed "Science for Global Challenges," provided an opportunity for researchers from all fields to share their work with society through interactive activities, demonstrations, and discussions.
LIP participated in the major activity hubs, each coordinated by different entities, and was present in multiple locations:
- Organization coordinated by the National Museum of Natural History and Science of the University of Lisbon:
- Lisbon: At the National Museum of Natural History and Science (Rua da Escola Politécnica, 58) and at Praça do Príncipe Real.
- Organization coordinated by the University of Coimbra:
- Coimbra: The Science Route started at Largo da Portagem, passing through Visconde da Luz and Ferreira Borges streets, and concluded at Praça 8 de Maio.
- Organization coordinated by the School of Sciences of the University of Minho and the Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory:
- Braga: At Fórum Braga.
- Organization coordinated by Ciência Viva / Pavilion of Knowledge:
- Lisbon: At the Pavilion of Knowledge (Parque das Nações).
- Oeiras: At Marina de Oeiras, near Praia da Torre.
NEI is a European-wide event, promoted in Portugal by a consortium of nine partner institutions, including LIP, aiming to demonstrate the impact and importance of science in society. This year's theme focused on how research can address global challenges in areas such as health, the environment, and the economy. In Lisbon, Coimbra, and Braga, LIP showcased its work in particle physics and other fields, offering visitors the chance to engage with scientists and explore the impact of scientific research on their lives.
In Lisbon, activities took place at the National Museum of Natural History and Science, where LIP’s booths attracted many people interested in learning more about the mysteries of the universe, from particle physics to advanced technologies supporting scientific discoveries. In Coimbra, during the Science Route, over 500 scientists participated in activities spread throughout the city's downtown, with LIP actively contributing to a vibrant atmosphere of science communication, public interaction, and awareness of the importance of science for a sustainable and inclusive future. In Braga, at Fórum Braga, the local program, coordinated by the School of Sciences of the University of Minho and the Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, featured over 100 activities inspired by the theme "Science for Global Challenges." Among these, the Science Fair stood out, showcasing projects developed by students from UMinho's partner schools, giving the public an opportunity to engage with local science and explore innovative solutions to global challenges.
The European Researchers' Night is an event that celebrates science and scientists, highlighting their central role in addressing global challenges and building a better future. LIP is proud to be part of this initiative, promoting science as a key pillar for sustainable development and innovation.
