A team from LIP, led by our colleague Paulo Fonte, is part of a group of Portuguese volunteers that has just developed a new concept for an emergency ventilator that meets the requirements for the ventilation of patients with Covid-19. The group was formed in the context of the project #ProjectOpenAir.
The idea is that these ventilators can be built with materials easily available on the market, even in times or regions with severe logistical difficulties, and at a very moderate cost. For that, the developed design minimizes the use of technical components, and those used are common in industry. A proof of concept was carried out at the LIP laboratories in Coimbra and is described in a scientific paper now available.
