Made in LIP: optical fibres for the ATLAS Upgrade

LIP-ECO/R. Gonçalo | 12 Fevereiro, 2019

"Two thousand optical fibres prepared at the LIP LOMaC lab were shipped to Michigan State University, where new detector modules are being assembled for ATLAS"

The heart of the hadronic calorimeter of the ATLAS experiment was born in the LOMaC laboratory at LIP. It is made of special wavelength-shifting optical fibres which read out the light produced by passing particles.

Just as the year 2019 started we were sending 2000 optical fibres newly prepared at LIP to the Michigan State University. There, special counters are being assembled to upgrade the ATLAS detector and improve its performance for the next LHC run.

The counters will later travel to CERN, to be installed on the ATLAS detector during 2019/2020.
