LIP in the calibration of DUNE

S. Andringa, LIP-ECO | 02 Novembro, 2018

"Our colleague José Maneira took the leadership of the team that will build the calibration system of the experiment "

The DUNE experiment, which LIP has recently joined, has the main goal of observing CP violation in neutrino oscillations — which could be part of the explanation of matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. The first DUNE detector should start working in 2022 at the SURF laboratory, USA. It will observe neutrino beams created at Fermilab, 1300 km away, starting in 2026.

With 1144 collaborators from 32 countries, DUNE is the largest neutrino physics collaboration in the world. Besides the physics studies teams, the collaboration is organized in 11 consortia with the responsibility of the construction of different parts of the experiment.

Our colleague José Maneira, coordinator of the LIP Neutrino Physics Group, has just been appointed leader of the new Consortium for the calibration systems. In the short term, the tasks are the conception and design of the systems used to calibrate the liquid argon detectors for the Technical Design Report of DUNE, and the testing of prototypes of these systems at CERN.
