LIP makes a strong scientific contribution to ICHEP 2026

LIP-ECO/Lígia Breda Melo | 18 Agosto, 2026

LIP researchers contributed to the scientific organisation of the conference and presented work across several areas at one of the world's leading particle physics conferences.

LIP had a strong presence at the 43rd International Conference on High Energy Physics (ICHEP 2026), held from 30 July to 5 August in Natal, Brazil, bringing together the international community to present and discuss some of the latest developments in particle physics, astrophysics, cosmology and accelerator science.

Organised every two years under the auspices of the C11 Commission of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP), ICHEP is one of the world's leading international conferences in particle physics and, for more than 50 years, has served as a major forum for presenting new results and discussing the future of research in the field.

LIP's participation in this edition was particularly significant at the level of scientific organisation. LIP researchers served as track conveners, responsible for selecting contributions and organising the corresponding parallel sessions, in four areas of the scientific programme: Cristóvão Vilela and José Maneira in Neutrino Physics, Liliana Apolinário in Heavy Ions, Ruben Conceição in Astroparticle Physics and Cosmology, and Pedro Abreu in Education & Outreach.

LIP researcher Mário Pimenta was also a member of the International Advisory Committee of ICHEP 2026, which brought together researchers and representatives of scientific institutions from several countries.

LIP was also represented in the scientific sessions, with four oral presentations across different areas. Liliana Apolinário presented new developments in the study of the structure and evolution of parton showers in dense media, in work aimed at increasing the precision of calculations associated with jet quenching.

In astroparticle physics and cosmology, Ruben Conceição presented work exploring hadron production through extensive air showers produced by ultra-high-energy cosmic rays. Inês Alvito presented, in the same session, a study of the sensitivity of air-shower observables to different hadronic interaction models, with applications to the discrimination between gamma-ray-induced showers and the hadronic background.

Patrícia Conde-Muíño presented research and development work on calorimetry software for the ATLAS Event Filter in the context of the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), as part of the session dedicated to the operation, performance and upgrade of present detectors. The study explores different computing solutions, including GPUs, FPGAs and neural networks, to address the increased processing demands expected during the next phase of the LHC.

LIP's scientific participation also included a poster presented by Wallison Luiz Anicezio Campanelli in the area of neutrino physics, dedicated to the UV-laser calibration system of ProtoDUNE-HD at CERN. The work contributes to the development of methods to precisely characterise the detector's electric field, with a view to the calibration of the future DUNE experiment.

With researchers involved in shaping the scientific programme and contributions spanning neutrino physics, heavy-ion physics, astroparticle physics, detector development, computing and science communication, LIP's participation in ICHEP 2026 reflected the diversity of the Laboratory's research and activities.

The ICHEP 2026 plenary sessions were streamed online and can be watched on the conference's official YouTube channel.
