On 23 June 2026, Rafael Parente successfully defended his master's dissertation, “Machine Learning techniques for particle flux reconstruction applied to the ESA JUICE mission radiation monitor”, at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, graduating with a mark of 19/20.
The dissertation was supervised by Marco Pinto (LIP/IST) and co-supervised by Patrícia Serrano Gonçalves (LIP/IST).
The defence took place at Instituto Superior Técnico before a jury composed of Inês Ochoa, Marco Pinto and Guilherme Milhano.
The research makes an important contribution to the analysis of data from RADEM, the radiation monitor aboard ESA's JUICE mission. The method developed successfully reconstructs solar proton event fluxes in an operating configuration of RADEM where conventional reconstruction methods failed. The work also resulted in a scientific paper submitted to the journal Space Weather for peer review.
