LIP returns to «O Espaço vai à Escola» with the challenge of radiation in Space
Luísa Arruda brought the talk “The challenge of radiation for journeys to Mars and the Moon” to schools, in a new edition of the ESERO Portugal initiative — the educational programme of the European Space Agency.

LIP once again joined O Espaço vai à Escola (Space Goes to School), organised by ESERO Portugal - the European Space Education Resource Office, an educational programme of the European Space Agency (ESA).
LIP researcher Luísa Arruda took part once more with the talk “The challenge of radiation for journeys to Mars and the Moon”, offering students a scientific perspective on the risks and challenges that radiation poses to human space exploration.
Throughout October, she delivered both in-person and virtual sessions for pupils from lower and upper secondary schools, including:
- Escola Secundária do Arco-Íris, Portela (Loures) – Year 12
- Escola Básica e Secundária da Sé, Lamego – Year 11
- Centro de Educação e Desenvolvimento Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Casa Pia, Lisbon) – Year 9
- Escola Básica e Secundária Dr. Serafim Leite, São João da Madeira – Year 10
- Escola Básica e Secundária Amélia Rey Colaço, Linda-a-Velha (Oeiras) – Year 12
The sessions were marked by the curiosity and enthusiasm of the students, who had the opportunity to explore topics such as cosmic radiation, its effects on the human body, and protective strategies developed for long-duration space missions.
ESERO uses Space as an inspiring context for learning science, technology and mathematics, promoting students’ interest in these areas and encouraging future scientific and engineering careers.
