Gabriela Oliveira awarded the Alcino Lavrador Prize 2025

Gabriela Oliveira, a former master’s student in Physical Engineering at the University of Minho and a member of LIP, has been awarded the Alcino Lavrador Prize 2025, which recognises the best graduating master’s student at the School of Engineering of the University of Minho.
Gabriela completed her master's thesis within LIP’s Phenomenology Group, under the Competence Centre in Simulation and Big Data, supervised by Nuno Castro and Guilherme Milhano, and was awarded the highest possible grade: 20 out of 20. Her thesis, titled “Quantum computing applications to quantum chromodynamics: jet evolution in a quantum computer”, contributed to advancing the application of quantum computing to particle physics and has already resulted in a publication in Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence.
In addition to this recent recognition, Gabriela had previously won the UMinho Scientific Research Initiation Award, in 2021.
After completing her master’s, Gabriela began her PhD at the Novo Nordisk Quantum Computing Programme (NQCP), at the renowned Niels Bohr Institute, in Copenhagen, where she continues to explore the intersection of quantum computing and fundamental physics.
The Alcino Lavrador Prize, promoted by Altice Portugal, aims to recognise academic excellence in the fields of STEM and TICE, and pays tribute to the legacy of innovation of Alcino Lavrador, former Director-General of Altice Labs.
