LIP leads development of agricultural data space for Portugal
"AGRISPACE project creates national pilot for data sharing and analysis in agriculture using Artificial Intelligence"
LIP, in close collaboration with the National Advanced Computing Centre (CNCA), is leading the development of AGRISPACE, a national pilot project for the creation of a dedicated agricultural data space.
This data space, aligned with the European Partnership “Agriculture of Data”, aims to facilitate the secure sharing and processing of large volumes of agricultural data by public and private entities, promoting a more sustainable and technologically advanced agricultural sector. The platform will incorporate advanced computing capabilities, including machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms, enabling the creation of innovative data-based products such as crop monitoring models or soil condition analysis using satellite imagery and meteorological data.
AGRISPACE addresses key structural challenges in the digitalisation of agriculture: fragmented data, interoperability issues, and the lack of computational resources in public entities. By integrating data and enabling near-source processing, the project seeks to overcome these barriers, promote resource efficiency, and enhance the ability to monitor public policies.
LIP, with its extensive experience in distributed computing, data science, and artificial intelligence, is responsible for the technical development of the platform, building on its participation in European projects such as EOSC, AI4EOSC, and C-Scale. CNCA provides the underlying storage and processing infrastructure, made available through a project approved under FCT’s Advanced Computing Calls. AGRISPACE is part of the national consortium Portuguese AGRIculture Data SPACE, which includes FCT, Portugal Space, GPP, IFAP, DGADR, INIAV, and LIP, among others. The project’s first phase spans 12 months and began in February 2025, with the goal of delivering a functional demonstrator of the data space and its associated applications.
This joint effort aims to position Portugal as a relevant player in the future integration of European data spaces, not only in agriculture, but also across other strategic areas of public administration.
