Carlos Alberto Nabais Conde
"1935-2024"
On the occasion of the death of Carlos Nabais Conde, Retired Full Professor at the Department of Physics of the University of Coimbra and member of LIP since 2011, we must convey our condolences to his family.
Prominent physicist, Professor Nabais Conde gained prestige at the University thanks to the scientific work carried out in Coimbra from the mid-60s of the last century - work initially carried out in close collaboration with Professor Armando Policarpo, his colleague and, later, founder of LIP. In fact, thanks to their solid background in Atomic and Molecular Physics and Nuclear Physics, the development of the gaseous proportional scintillation detector would make the UC Physics Department internationally known, opening doors for deepening expertise in many aspects of the physics of gaseous radiation detectors and associated technologies.
Prof. Nabais Conde created and developed Line 3 of the UC Centro de Física da Radiação e dos materiais and, later, the Centro de Instrumentação, with recognized competence also in the field of analog and digital electronics. Teams from this center would later participate in the development of radiation detectors for cutting-edge nuclear and particle physics experiments, as well as electronics developments for European nuclear fusion projects. As of 2011, already retired, Prof. Nabais Conde would join the Coimbra Branch of LIP, with a team that participates in the NEXT experience and in the development of instrumentation for space research.
In the course of Prof. Nabais Conde career as a professor, his important role in creating Physics Engineering courses at FCTUC deserves to be highlighted, as well as his contribution, over more than a decade, to the development of teaching and research in Physics at the Universidade da Beira Interior.
