Recently, LIP secured its position within LHCONE as one of the Tier-2 sites, establishing a crucial connection within the network infrastructure. LHCONE serves as the backbone for data exchange among the various experiments conducted at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
This integration was made possible through the Portuguese Tier-2's recent linkage to LHCONE via a dedicated 100Gbps connection facilitated by the RCTS network operated by FCCN. This high-speed connection vastly improves the interconnectivity for data transfers between the ATLAS and CMS experiments, bridging the gap between the national Tier-2 and the computing centers of the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG).
The emergence of LHCONE heralds a new era in network evolution, catering to the intricate demands of 21st-century research and education communities. Serving as the largest multidomain service for the global Research and Education sector, LHCONE has rapidly evolved from a modest technical endeavor to a robust global network.
Currently, the LHCONE service spans 40 national, regional, and intercontinental research and education network operators, connecting over 150 sites across four continents. This extensive network supplants the outdated hybrid private/shared topology of the late 1990s, which struggled to accommodate the evolving demands of data processing in the particle physics community. The shift to LHCONE reflects both the increased data production of the LHC experiments and the evolving methodologies for data utilization and analysis.
