Experimental Campaign at R3B/GSI

LIP-ECO/Carolina Felgueiras | 05 Abril, 2024

"LIP researchers played a pivotal role in overseeing experiments S118 and S091 at GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research "

LIP/FCUL researchers Daniel Galaviz, Manuel Xarepe and Diogo Miguel, in collaboration with LIP-Coimbra researcher Alberto Blanco, played a crucial role in preparing and carrying out experiments S118 and S091 during the recent experimental campaign at GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in February this year. They supervised the resistive plate chamber (RPC) detector currently in use in the experimental configuration of the Reactions with Relativistic Radioactive Beams collaboration (R3B).

Experiment S118 aimed to compare the main detection systems of the R3B configuration: the CALorimeter for In-Flight detection of gamma-rays and high-energy charged pArticles (CALIFA) electromagnetic calorimeter, the FragmentatiOn Of Target (FOOT) charged particle tracker, the heavy ion tracking system composed of fibres and scintillating bars Time Of Flight Detector (TOFD) and the New Large-Area Neutron Detector (NeuLAND), using various physical channels.

Subsequently, the S091 experiment explored the process of eliminating a deuteron from different carbon isotopes, from isotopes with a low amount of neutrons (10C) to isotopes with a high amount of neutrons (14C and 16C). The high energies considered (approximately 400 MeV/u) made it possible to access quasi-free scattering (QFS) conditions using the R3B liquid hydrogen target to induce the elimination process.

Special thanks to the European consortium EURO-LABS Infrastructure. Thanks to their support, Diogo was able to stay at GSI and contribute to the success of this experiment!
