And so went the LIP Open Day
"The LIP Open Day took place at the laboratory's premises in Lisbon on 7 December 2023 from 16h to 20h. LIP thus associated to inauguration of TTC@ULisboa. For the two hundred or so visitors, it was a late afternoon to see, do, observe, experiment and talk about it all with LIP scientists. Here you find a short photo album."
The visit began (or ended) in the building's atrium with the interactive exhibition "Disinformation", with which LIP's SPAC group challenges us to test our judgement on our ability to identify disinformation. The exhibition can be visited in the TTC@ULisboa (University of Lisbon's Centre for Technology Transfer and Knowledge Enhancement) for a while longer!
Following the map, those who visited us were then invited not only to get to know LIP and the people who carry out their research here, but also to travel to some of the places where our daily work takes us - where our experiments are set up, where the data we analyse comes from, where the detectors we build go, where the research carried out at LIP is applied.
Entering the different spaces, you could find yourself in one of LIP's laboratories or in its computing centre; but also at CERN, at the Pierre Auger cosmic ray observatory, or at the bottom of the mine where the SNOLAB laboratory is located; you could discover applications of particle physics technologies in places as different as a hospital and interstellar space.
It was an evening of seeing, doing, observing, experimenting and talking about it all with scientists from LIP. The two hundred or so people with a variety of different ages and interests who visited us in those four hours exceeded the expectations and were a great surprise for the scientists - who generally enjoy discussing about their work but aren't always sure that anyone wants to listen.
