NUC-RIA: a successful experimental campaign in Seville within EURO-LABS/CLEAR

LIP-ECO/Carolina Felgueiras/CLEAR | 24 Março, 2023

"Researchers from the LIP NUC-RIA group performed essential characterization measurements of the targets used in the IS698 experiment at CERN’s ISOLDE. All happened in the CNA in Seville, Spain, in the framework of the CLEAR consortium and of the EURO-LABS project."

Last month, researchers from the LIP NUC-RIA (Nuclear Reactions, Instrumentation and Astrophysics) and from FCUL carried out elemental characterization measurements of the solid helium targets used in the IS698 experiment at CERN’s ISOLDE facility. The work was developed at the National Accelerator Center (CNA) in Seville, Spain, with the collaboration of local team members, and within the framework of the European project EUROpean Laboratories for Accelerator Based Science (EURO-LABS),

In the IS698 experiment, high intensity radioactive beams of tin (Sn-108 and Sn-110) bombarded solid helium (He-4, alpha particles) enriched targets. The data collected will allow to study nuclear properties in depth and to deduce nuclear potentials from the reactions with alpha particles. The goal is to contribute to the understanding of how proton-rich elements are generated.

The elemental characterization (before and after the experiment) of the targets used in nuclear reaction experiments is essential for the correct interpretation of the obtained results. For several years, this characterization work has been carried out with great success at the CNA, thanks to the application of ion beam analysis (IBA) techniques.

The CNA is part of the CLEAR (Cluster of Low Energy Accelerators for Research) consortium, a group of three facilities (ATOMKI in Debrecen, CNA in Seville and CTN/IST in Lisbon) that offer access to stable ion and neutron beams, in the framework of the EURO-LABS project. The experiments now carried out launch this experimental work platform in Seville.

The work has now been highlighted in the CLEAR news.
