Two master theses defended

LIP-ECO/L. Apolinário | 23 Novembro, 2022

"Manuel Mariano and Francisco Barreiro, from the LIP Phenomenology Group (Pheno), successfully defended today their MSc theses at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST). Congratulations to both!"

The research work of the Phenomenology group of LIP is situated in the connection between theory and experiment, and includes topics ranging from quantum chromodynamics (QCD) to the search for new physics, including studies for the planning of future accelerators. As far as QCD is concerned, one of the group's specialities is certainly heavy ion collisions.

Manuel Mariano and Francisco Barreiro developed the research work for their master theses integrated in the Pheno group, on the development of different aspects of one of the Monte Carlo generators for heavy ion collisions, JEWEL.

One of the main goals of heavy ion collisions is the creation and study of the properties of the quark-gluon plasma. During their propagation, the interaction between QCD jets and a hot, dense medium results in a partial loss of energy (jquenching). Jets therefore play an essential role in the study of the plasma properties.

It is in this context that the two theses defended today are situated: "Sensitivity of jet sub-structure observables to jet quenching in collisions of light nuclei" is the title of Manuel Mariano's thesis. Francisco Barreiro's thesis is on "Geometrical aspects of jet quenching in small systems". In both cases, Guilherme Milhano and Liliana Apolinário were the supervisors.

The presentation and discussion of the two theses took place today, 23rd November 2022, at IST. The members of the jury were Mário Pimenta (president), João Nuno Pires (examiner) and Guilherme Milhano (representing the supervisors) were members of the jury.

Congratulations!
