Bio

Jorge M. Maia obtained his under-graduation degree in Physics Engineering (Instrumentation field), his master degree in Physics (specialization in Technological Physics), and his PhD degree in Physics (specialization in Technological Physics) with a thesis in the field of micropattern gas radiation detectors, all by the University of Coimbra, Portugal, in 1994, 1997 and 2005, respectively. The majority of his PhD work was performed at the Department of Particle Physics, The Weizmann Institute of Sciences, Rehovot, Israel.

From 1998 to 2005, he was a Lecturer of Physics, Physics Department, University of Beira Interior, Covilhã, Portugal. From 2005 to 2010, he was a Researcher at the Instrumentation Center, Department of Physics, University of Coimbra, Portugal. From 2005 to 2021, he was an Assistant Professor of Physics at the Physics Department, University of Beira Interior. Since 2010, he joined the LIP-Laboratory of Instrumentation and Particle Experimental Physics, Coimbra, Portugal. Since 2021, he became an Assistant Professor with Habilitation in Physics at the Physics Department, University of Beira Interior.

Jorge M. Maia has expertise in the development of radiation detectors for Nuclear and Astrophysics Instrumentation: micropattern gas detectors (GEMs, THGEMs, MHSPs) and compound semiconductor detectors (CdTe, CZT).

Currently, he develops research activities with the main focus on the physics of radiation detectors and applications: i) compound semiconductor detectors (CdTe, CZT), including the effects of space orbital radiation, namely protons, on semiconductor detectors; ii) application of radiation detectors, namely compound semiconductor detectors, in X-ray and gamma-ray polarimetry/imaging/spectroscopy; iii) application of nuclear and atomic techniques in detection and imaging, e.g. X-ray fluorescence spectrometry.

His research activities include regular participation in international experiments at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), Grenoble, France, and Large Italian X-ray facility (LARIX), University of Ferrara, Ferrara, Italy.

Within the scope of the project, ProtonRadCdTe-Protons Radiation Hardness in CdTe Detectors for Space Instrumentation, several proton irradiation experiments have been carried out at the medical cyclotron of Institute of Nuclear Sciences Applied to Health, University of Coimbra.

Recently, the proposal nº AO-2020-EMA-138, Ageing of Ge/Si and CZT samples for sensors and Laue lenses of future gamma-ray astrophysics telescopes, was approved by ESA/CNES, to carry out an experiment in the Bartolomeo module onboard the ISS, being co-responsible for the proposal and responsible for the tests with the CZT sample detectors. The main goals of this experiment are to study the aging and deterioration of CZT and Ge/Si crystals in the orbital environment, the full field of orbital radiation, namely the proton field, in combination with the extreme thermal cycle in orbit.

Jorge M. Maia is the author/co-author of more than 50 papers published in international journals (IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science, Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research A, Journal of Instrumentation, Experimental Astronomy, etc.) and conference proceedings. Additionally, he acts as a regular referee for the international scientific journal IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science and sporadically for other international journals.
