Dear Colleagues:

This notice is to remind you of the approach of the VIII International Conference on Calorimetry in High Energy Physics, to be held from Sunday June 13th through Saturday June 19th 1999, in Lisbon, Portugal.

The meeting will address all aspects of calorimetric particle detection and measurement with emphasis in high energy physics experiments. The main topics on the present and future of calorimetry will be covered, including low and medium energy calorimetry, applications in neutrino physics, astrophysics and medicine.

We have structured the conference in plenary sessions. Part of the program will be devoted to reviews of selected topics. Additional contributions will be included in the program on a time-available basis. If you would like to attend the conference, please acknowledge your interest to the conference secretariat via e-mail, fax, letter, or register via our web site as soon as possible. As this is a limited mailing, please alert other colleagues at your institution who might have an interest in attending CALOR99.

Sessions:

The Conference will be organized in plenary sessions and will start with an overview and the role of calorimetry in "hot" physics research (top, higgs, neutrinos, etc, only invited talks). Tentatively we foresee the following regular sessions:


Call for papers:

Participants are invited to submit abstracts to the Conference. The recommended size of the abstracts is about 150 words. Abstracts should be submitted preferentially using our web form for registration or by e-mail in plain text. Abstracts can also be submitted by fax or letter, but please, try to avoid it if possible.

Abstracts will be accepted until April 12th.

The collection of abstracts submitted via the web form or by e-mail using plain text will be made available to the participants. The abstracts received by fax or letter may also be added to the collection.


Registration and Fee:

The Conference registration may be done by e-mail, fax, letter or by web registration form and should be done as soon as possible.

The early registration fee is 385 EURO (77 186 PTE, approximately US $420) if done no later than April 12th, 1999. This fee includes lunches from June 14th to June 19th, coffee breaks, the conference dinner, the proceedings and social activities.

After April 12th and at the conference, the registration fee will be 460 EURO (92 222 PTE, approximately US $500). Registration will be open at the meeting location on June 13th.

Currencies

The accepted currencies are the Portuguese Escudo (PTE) and the EURO. The conversion is fixed and is 1 EURO = 200.482 PTE.

Payment

The fee is to be paid in PTE or EURO via credit card, check payable to LIP-CALOR99, bank transfer, or on site with money or credit card. We accept Visa, Eurocard, Mastercard or American Express credit cards. We would like to point out that sending credit card information across the network is an unsecure procedure. You may do it if you like, but we cannot guarantee confidentiality. We prepared a text version of the formulary to be printed and sent to us by fax or letter with the credit card information.

Meeting Location:

The CALOR99 conference will be held at the Museum of Science of the University of Lisbon, near the center of the city.

The Museum of Science of the University of Lisbon sites in the old town. The old town is located in front of the Tagus river, spreading to the surrounding hills over a few square kms. The Center is located in an ancient valley that was the riverbed of a former afluent of Tagus. Most of its buildings date from the late 18th century, after the devastation caused by the terrible earthquake that ocurred in November 1st, 1755. The Center is surrounded by two hills, each of them being the place of very old and typical quartiers. The museum sites on the top of the west hill, near the Belvedere of S. Pedro de Alcantara.

Accomodation:

Accomodation is arranged in three hotels: Aparthotel Orion Eden, Hotel Amazonia and Pensao Astoria. All prices below are quoted in Portuguese Escudos (PTE). The deadline for reservations at the prices and conditions listed bellow is April 12th. We advise you to make reservations well in advance because Lisbon is a favourite destination in June.

How to book?

Reservations should be done by fax, directly to the hotels, using the text forms provided at the bottom of this bulletin, until April 12th. In case of difficulties in the reservation contact the conference secretariat by fax or e-mail. A credit card is required to guarantee your reservation.

We have made reservations for the conference for the period 12 - 20 June. Reservations for dates before June 12th or after June 20th are dependent on the availability of rooms in the hotels. In the night from 12 to 13 the most popular festivities of Lisbon are celebrated.

Aparthotel Orion Eden

Aparthotel Orion Eden is a nice new aparthotel, located in the center of the city (Praca dos Restauradores) and is ideal for people who wish to bring their family. The number of studios (T0) available for 1 or 2 persons is 15, and the number of apartments T1 (for 1 to 4 persons) available is 5. To go to the museum, the recommended path is to take the funicular and then walk about 15 minutes to the museum. The daily prices are the following: T0: 12300 PTE (+ 600 PTE with the option of daily cleaning); T1: 15000 PTE, (+ 800 PTE with the option of daily cleaning). Optional breakfast at the price of 1500 PTE / person. A guarantee deposit of 30% of the reservation is required. One night will be charged for cancellations after May 12th. Hotel Amazonia

Hotel Amazonia is a well equipped 3 star hotel, located in a quiet place near the conference location. Walking distance to the museum is about 15 minutes. Singles: 11100 PTE, Doubles: 12600 PTE, breakfast included. 80 rooms are available. A guarantee deposit of 2 nights is required. One night will be charged for cancellations after April 12th, 2 nights after May 12th. In case of no-show the full reservation will be charged. Pensao Astoria

Pensao Astoria is a well located modest hotel. Walking distance to the museum is about 15 minutes. Singles: 6500 PTE, Doubles: 8000 PTE, breakfast included. 50 rooms are available. One night will be charged for cancellations later than one week before arrival date. Form for reservation in Pensao Astoria is available here.


Travel:

Lisbon airport is served by TAP-Air Portugal and also by most of the major airlines. We advise you to make reservations well in advance because Lisbon is a favourite destination in June.

Visas:

Foreign participants are advised to inquire as soon as possible at a Portuguese Consulate or Embassy whether a visa is required.

About Lisbon:

Lisbon is a nice city located on the hills in front of the Tagus river, near the Atlantic Ocean. The 12th of June is the day of Saint António, the patron of the city.
