LIP at Hard Probes 2018

Liliana Apolinário | 08 Outubro, 2018

"The 9th International Conference on Hard & Electromagnetic Probes of High-Energy Nuclear Collisions was held in Aix-le-Bains, France, last week. Once more, the LIP Phenomenology group was very well represented. "

The Hard Probes 2018: International Conference on Hard & Electromagnetic Probes of High-Energy Nuclear Collisions was held in Aix-le-Bains, France, from September 30th to October 5th. The number of participants, all heavy-ion physicists, exceeded 250. Among them, there were some members of the LIP Phenomenology group.

The main focus of this conference is to address the modifications of hard and electromagnetic probes that propagate through a hot and dense state of matter that is produced simultaneously in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. This state of matter, named quark-gluon plasma (QGP), is believed to have existed in the first moments of existence of our Universe. Through the characterisation of the modifications imprinted on this probes, it should be possible to identify the main characteristics of the QGP and further constrain models that try to describe the initial evolution of our Universe. This year, the conference was highly dedicated to the description of jets - clusters of high momentum particles -  in particular on its substructure, as a novel and accurate probe of the QGP properties. The two ultra-relativistic heavy-ion colliders - RHIC at United States and LHC in Europe - presented the new results related to this particular probe. Additionally, there was a dedicated session for future heavy-ion accelerators that are included in the European strategy for high energy physics.

The Phenomenology group of LIP was once more strongly represented: Liliana Apolinário presented the plenary overview of Monte Carlo models dedicated to the description of jets in heavy-ion collisions, João Barata shown the group results on the identification of modified quark and gluon initiated jets when produced in such collisions and Korinna Zapp delivered the jet theory plenary summary of the several works presented during the conference. In addition to the these 2 plenaries and 1 parallel, 5 other parallel contributions in collaboration with the Phenomenology group were also selected for this conference. The next edition will be in 2020 (June), Austin, Texas (USA).
