The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) has emerged as a pivotal initiative, fostering collaboration and innovation across the European research landscape. Within this ambitious framework, the EOSC Beyond project has set its sights on expanding the capabilities and reach of EOSC, with LIP (Laboratório de Instrumentação e Física Experimental de Partículas) playing a central role as part of the consortium.
As a member of the EOSC Beyond consortium, LIP's computing infrastructure has been entrusted with a critical role in this groundbreaking endeavor. The project, which started on April 1, 2024, and is due to conclude on March 31, 2027, is funded by the EC Horizon Europe program, underlining its significance in advancing European research and innovation.
The overarching aim of EOSC Beyond is to propel the growth of EOSC by providing novel technical solutions that empower developers to seamlessly integrate diverse EOSC resources into scientific application environments. This vision entails the establishment of a federated network of pilot Nodes operating at various levels, from national to thematic, to meet the unique needs of specific scientific missions.
Key objectives of the project include accelerating the development of scientific applications, facilitating dynamic resource deployment for Open Science initiatives, promoting innovation through testing environments, and aligning EOSC architecture with European data spaces. By leveraging co-design methodologies and collaborating with national, regional, and thematic research infrastructures, EOSC Beyond aims to enhance the existing EOSC Core services and framework.
LIP's computing infrastructure assumes a leadership role in the project, particularly in the domain of "Software Release Coordination and Software Quality Assurance." Tasked with establishing and adopting a robust Release and Deployment Management process, LIP is committed to promoting Continuous Integration (CI) and Software Quality Assurance (SQA) methodologies across all software components. By adhering to SQA best practices and leveraging SQA-as-a-Service (SQAaaS) solutions, LIP ensures the integrity and reliability of EOSC Core functionalities.
Moreover, LIP spearheads the development of an EOSC Core Innovation Sandbox, an EOSC Integration Suite, and an EOSC Execution Framework, aimed at fostering innovation and enhancing the interoperability of EOSC resources. Through its dedication to a DevOps methodology, LIP strives to establish a regular release cycle, thereby facilitating the seamless evolution of EOSC capabilities.
In essence, LIP's pivotal role in the EOSC Beyond project underscores its commitment to advancing European Open Science, fostering collaboration, and driving innovation at the forefront of scientific research.
