PETsys awarded CMS industrial Prize

LIP-ECO/J. Varela | 31 Maio, 2023

"The CMS collaboration at CERN has attributed the CMS industry award to the LIP spin-off company PETsys Electronics for the challenging development of the TOFHIR2 front-end ASIC of the barrel MTD detector, performed in collaboration with the LIP-CMS group. Congratulations!"

In   the   High-Luminosity   phase   of   the   LHC   physics   program  starting  in  2029,  the  accelerator  will  provide an  additional  integrated  luminosity  of  3000  fb-1  over  10 years of operation. The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is undergoing an extensive upgrade program to prepare for the challenging conditions of the HL-LHC,

The upgrade includes the construction of the new MIP Timing Detector (MTD). The MTD will consist of barrel and endcap timing layers, BTL and ETL respectively, providing precision timing of charged particles. The BTL sensors are based on LYSO Ce scintillation crystals coupled to SiPMs with TOFHIR2 ASICs for the front-end readout. A resolution of 30-40 ps for MIP signals at a rate of 2.5 Mhit/s per channel is expected at the beginning of HL-LHC operation.

The precise time information from this detector will reduce the effects of the high levels of pileup expected at the HL-LHC. The time information assigned to each track will enable the use of 4D reconstruction algorithms and will further discriminate interaction vertices within the same bunch crossing.

The LIP CMS group in collaboration with PETsys Electronics participates in the construction of the new CMS Timing Detector. The group is responsible  for  the  design  and  construction  of  the  readout system of the BTL, including the high-performance time-of-flight (TOF) ASIC for time measurement TOFHIR2, which now motivates this award.
