On the podium of 3MT ULisboa!

LIP-ECO | 30 Maio, 2023

"Matteo Pisano, PhD student in the LIP CMS group and Técnico, and collaborator of LIP-ECO group won the third prize in the first edition of ULisboa's 3 Minute Thesis competition. Congratulations, Matteo!"

The three 3MT winners, accompanied by the rector of ULisboa and representatives of Público and FLAD.

The final took place today, May 30th, at 18h30 at the Natural History and Science Museum (MUNHAC). In the amphitheatre of the chemistry laboratory, each of the finalists made their presentation (3 minutes long, obviously) before the jury and the audience - which included the rector of ULisboa, Luís Ferreira, the vice-rector for research and innovation, Cecilia Rodrigues, and representatives of the Público newspaper and the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD), ULisboa's partners in this project.

Matteo presented, in a clear and captivating way, and in Portuguese, his research topic, focused on the study of the production of matter particles in photon interactions at the LHC using the CMS detector. A special thanks to the members of the LIP cheerleading squad that spontaneously gathered at MUNHAC - it was wonderful to see, what a pity we were not even more :)

The awards ceremony will take place on 27th June, at the rectory of ULisboa.

But the path to conquer this place on the podium started already a few months ago! To participate in the ULisboa's 3 Minute Thesis competition, each student had to send a video explaining their PhD project to a non-specialist audience, highlighting the importance and impact of the research in progress. Only students already in their third year of their PhD could apply.

The more than 150 students who entered the competition benefited from three days of training in science communication, in its various aspects and for different audiences - a training course which was, in itself, an excellent reason to apply. Only 12 were later selected for the final, among them Matteo Pisano.

It should be noted that Matteo is also a (voluntary) member of the LIP-ECO (Education, Communication and Outreach) group and participates regularly in the group's activities (including the weekly meetings).

Besides developing the participants' skills in communicating complex ideas to a lay audience, 3MT aims to promote scientific culture and foster interdisciplinarity and mutual knowledge at ULisboa.
