Antimatter Day

LIP-ECO/CERN | 01 Fevereiro, 2023

"It is 95 years today since the publication of the first of Paul Dirac's papers 'The quantum theory of the electron', which predicted the existence of the electron's antiparticle. What is anti-matter and where is it? "

Today is Antimatter Day! We celebrated with CERN and other Member States on social media.

For every type of particle there is an anti-particle, equal but with opposite charge. The world around us is made of matter. But are there anti-stars and anti-galaxies made of anti-atoms in which positive anti-electrons orbit around negative anti-nuclei? The world around us is made of matter. What happened to all the anti-matter that formed at the beginning of the Universe? What happened to all the anti-matter that existed in the beginning of the Universe?

At LIP, we are looking for the answer to these questions in several experiments. The AMS detector works on the International Space Station and searches for anti-matter from space.

Rare phenomena in which there is a slight asymmetry between matter and anti-matter have been observed at the LHC. Studying them in detail can help to better understand the Universe.

The SNO+ experiment at SNOLAB will investigate whether the neutrino is its own anti-particle, which could help explain the asymmetry between matter and anti-matter in the Universe.
