First ProtoTera PhD Student Workshop

LIP-ECO | 29 Novembro, 2022

"The workshop took place yesterday and today at the Health Sciences Campus of the University of Coimbra. It brought together PhD students, supervisors and other experts in an opportunity to present and discuss the work in progress."

The opening of the Workshop was made by Antero Abrunhosa, director of ICNAS, who pointed out that "There is a critical mass of people that is studying the area and this is an opportunity that we cannot miss". Also present were the other members of the organizing committee and representatives of the institutions of the consortium: Mário Pimenta and Patrícia Gonçalves (LIP), José Marques and Pedro Brogueira (CTN/IST). The opening session was also attended by the Rector UC, Amílcar Falcão, the director of FMUC, Carlos Robalo Cordeiro, and the chairman of the Board of Directors of CHUC, Carlos Santos.

In the first session, Antero Abrunhosa and Alberto Arteche (IFCA-Instituto de Fisica de Cantabria) spoke about prototherapy projects under development for Coimbra (Portugal) and Santander (Spain) respectively.

This was followed by presentations from PhD students, most of them from the ProtoTera programme, but also from other programmes researching in closely related areas. The meeting had around 40 participants, almost half of them PhD students.

Prototera is a consortium of LIP, CTN/Técnico (Nuclear Technological Campus of IST) ICNAS/UC (Institute of Nuclear Sciences Applied to Health of the UC) and Portuguese Institute of Oncology, with the support of FCT, which aims to support the development in Portugal of advanced technologies for cancer treatment, such as Prototherapy and Theranostics.

The ProtoTera PhD grants programme was created in 2020 under an agreement between FCT and the Association. Thirteen grants have already been awarded. ProtoTera has close collaborations with international reference centres, namely the German Cancer Research Center DKFZ Heidelberg (Germany), MD Anderson Cancer Centre (USA), CERN and GSI. In this framework, partnerships are also established in the advanced training of students.
