Master thesis defense
"Miguel Martins defended his MSc thesis in Physics Engineering at Técnico, obtaining the maximum classification. The research work was carried out within the LIP Auger group. Congratulations!"
The work, titled “Probing multiparticle production properties of the first ultra-high energy cosmic ray-Air interaction in Extensive Air Showers with low muon content”, proposes a measurable property of the shower that allows direct access to the properties of the first interaction of the cosmic ray with the atmosphere at energies currently unreachable in terrestrial accelerators.
In addition, Miguel evaluated the possibility of the R&D project MARTA (led by LIP and to be installed at the Pierre Auger Observatory) to carry out this measurement. This work, which led to a scientific publication [1], was developed within the scope of the LIP group in the Pierre Auger Observatory.
The thesis was supervised by Lorenzo Cazon (former member of LIP, currently at the University of Santiago de Compostela) and by Ruben Conceição (LIP/IST). The members of the jury were our colleagues Mário Pimenta (LIP/IST) as president, Pedro Assis (LIP/IST), and Ruben Conceição for the supervisors.
