New CERN Council President

The CERN Council has announced the election Eliezer Rabinovici as its 24th President, for a period of one year renewable until three years. The mandate of the new president starts on 1 January 2022, when Eliezer Rabinovici will take over from Ursula Bassler, who concludes her three-year term at the end of December 2021.
Professor Rabinovici is currently professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He received his PhD in high-energy physics at the Weizmann Institute of Science in 1974. He worked at Fermilab and Berkeley, in the USA, before returning to Israel. He served as director of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem from 2005 to 2012.
Rabinovici’s main field of research is theoretical particle physics. Throughout his career, he has held positions within several councils and committees. In 2004, he was appointed as one of Israel’s delegates to the CERN Council, where he served as vice president from 2016 to 2018.
Portugal has been a member of CERN since 1986 and is currently represented on the CERN Council by Mário Pimenta, President of LIP, and by Ambassador Rui Macieira, Permanent Representative of Portugal to the United Nations and other International Organizations.
