Portugal-Brazil collaboration in particle physics

LIP-ECO/M. Pimenta | 31 Maio, 2021

"A memorandum of understanding between Portugal and Brazil on Nuclear and Particle Physics, Astroparticles and Cosmology was signed yesterday in Lisbon. LIP is part of the working group that will follow the implementation of the agreement"

The memorandum of understanding now signed recognizes the high level of scientific and university cooperation existing between the two countries and aims to boost it in priority areas. In particular, it aims to coordinate and develop the existing collaboration between Portuguese and Brazilian research centers, with an emphasis on the participation at CERN, Pierre Auger Observatory, and Southern Wide-field Gamma-ray Observatory.

The planned actions include the training of new researchers, promotion of joint science and technology workshops, mobility of Portuguese and Brazilian researchers, development of common theoretical and experimental projects, as well as the common implementation and use of facilities and infrastructures, namely experimental and scientific computing infrastructures.

The agreement, signed by Manuel Heitor, Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education of Portugal, and Marcos Cesar Pontes, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovations of Brazil, also foresees the creation of a working and monitoring group made up of representatives of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and LIP, on the Portuguese side, and the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) and the Brazilian Center for Physical Research (CBPF), on the Brazilian side. Patrícia Gonçalves, member of the LIP Director’s Board, represented the Laboratory at the signature of the memorandum.
