European Researchers Night 2020 at LIP

LIP-ECO | 28 Novembro, 2020

"2020, certainly a difficult year in many respects, was a great year for the European Researchers Night at LIP! Come and learn more about the program, which was developed in a close collaboration between the LIP nodes in Braga, Coimbra and Lisboa "

The online program was long, and it was transmitted via live streaming on LIP’s youtube channel and involved a strong collaboration between the three LIP nodes. A dedicated page for the event was setup for the event, where the youtube videos can be found.

Also for the European Researchers Night, PhD student Pedro Teixeira produced and published on youtube a video on muon tomography, in the context of the project LOUMU, a collaboration between LIP, Centro Ciência Viva do Lousal and University of Évora.

###

Braga took-off at 17:00 with a virtual visit to the ATLAS experiment at CERN’s LHC conducted by PhD student Ana Peixoto in Braga, and with Mariana Velho (Science Communication student at UMinho) and the Brazilian colleague Denis Damazio at CERN. During the live, a total of 115 people were there (even if it was still quite early for a “night” show in Portugal). This number continued to grow afterwards and soon reached 200.

In Braga, LIP was also part of the exhibition promoted by Escola de Ciência of Universidade do Minho, with the obvious restrictions due to the pandemic. In-house produced model of the ATLAS magnetic system, the interactive display on LIP’s research activities, and  introductory panels on particle physics were the basis of the exhibition

Coimbra took over from 20:00 onwards, with a “Tertúlia" counting on a great panel of (very) young researchers from the three nodes of LIP: Ana Peixoto (PhD student in ATLAS), Ana Sofia Inácio (PhD student in the SNO+ neutrino experiment), Marco Pinto (a young LIP researcher who discussed his PhD thesis in space radiation environments and effects in 2019), Paulo Braz (PhD student about to finish his thesis in the LZ dark matter experiment) and Ricardo Barrué (PhD student in ATLAS). The “Tertúlia" was moderated by our colleague Ricardo Gonçalo, and 136 people watched live during the transmission, for a time that was about 20 minutes on average.

From 21:30 the NEI went on from Lisbon, with a virtual visit to CMS, the other LHC experiment in which LIP participates. The hosts where Pedro Abreu (in Lisbon) and José Carlos Silva and André David (at CERN), where  275 have passed during the live transmission on youtube and zoom, and asked many questions.

We warmly thank all those who attended for their presence, interest and enthusiasm, and all those at LIP who made this possible! A special thank you goes to Henrique Carvalho, from LIP-Minho, who has put in place all the technical setup and made sure everything run smoothly.
